We've missed out on seeing Dolphins up close on our trip so far, so we decided to drive back up to the Dolphin Discovery Centre in Bunbury early this morning and see if the Dolphins wanted to see us? Unfortunately it took us an hour to get there due to traffic, and as we rushed to the beach all the people there were walking out of the water, the Dolphins had been and gone!!! Aaaarh!!
Anyway we decided to wait on the beach as we were told that they may return. Thankfully only a few moments later we saw a fin coming in to shore, hopefully not a shark fin!
We went into the water and the single female Dolphin named Big Nic, so named because of the big nick in her dorsal fin, came in to see us. Rules are very strict, no hands in the water, no touching, no feeding etc. During our time in the water a total of nine Dolphins came in, one of them was an 8 month old calf. They also believe that Big Nic is pregnant due to her behaviour, but it hasn't been confirmed. At one stage I was playing with Lochie on the beach while others were in the water with the Dolphins and we decided to walk into the water about ankle deep. Suddenly Big Nic raced up to us almost beaching herself thinking we had a fish for her. We were told (yelled at) to get out of the water as they were worried Lochie would be hurt! Also channel 7 turned up to film the Dolphins and they interviewed us about our experience. I think we may have been too boring for them to use any of the footage though. We'll see if they air it. All in all a great experience! Tomorrow we leave Busselton for . . . . . . . ?
