We left Darwin on Thursday the 4/10/12 and headed south to Katherine. After a quick fuel stop we headed west towards the WA border and stopped at a rest stop on the side of the highway for the night. On the way we had over-taken two Spanish cyclists on their way to the Canning Stock Route. They also stopped at this rest stop for the night. Their bicycles had tyres as wide as a small motorcycle and they plan to mainly do dirt roads and tracks, I think they're crazy to do such a huge ride like that in this heat, I really think that they will struggle to make it! It was quite a warm night but I had fitted a 12v fan in the bedroom that helped keep us cool-ish during the night. In the morning we travelled to Victoria River Crossing Roadhouse and stopped in for a refreshing shower for $2.50 each. We then continued on to Timber Creek and stopped in for fuel and enquired about caravan accommodation. We decided to continue on to a free camp called Big Horse Creek Campground. When we got there we tried our luck at catching a Barra but not even a strike! We set up camp and the day heated up, it was over 40deg so I fired up the generator to run the air-conditioner and it ran for about 20hrs non-stop without a hiccup! If we didn't have the generator to run the air-con we would've had to move as it was VERY HOT! After a good night sleep in the cool we set off for Lake Argyle in WA. At the WA border we had to hand over all fruit and veg AND honey! We did already know about the border security so Kellie had cooked up most of our spuds and carrots and we ate a lot of fruit on the way that day!
The landscape changes so dramatically as you drive closer to WA. Spectacular craggy rocky mountains all around makes you feel like you're driving in a dry river bed and you almost feel that you're driving in the rocky deserts in America, really quite amazing!
We arrived at Lake Argyle which again can only be described as Spectacular! Lake Argyle was created amongst the mountain range by damming the Ord River and flooding Argyle Downs Station. They've created a huge lake, blue in colour, contrast against the brown craggy rock mountain range, it really is beautiful! We managed to get a very shady camping spot on a powered site and cooled off literally for hours in the amazing Infinity swimming pool! We spent a couple of nights here enjoying the serenity before moving on.
