We left Busselton this morning and travelled south through Augusta to Cape Leeuwin. It's a spectacular rugged coastline with a tall white lighthouse at the tip of the Cape that used to help the ships navigate the treacherous waters. Unfortunately it was too expensive for us to tour the lighthouse but we had a cuppa at the cafe and we picked up a couple of souvenirs relative to the area.
On our way out we stopped at the Augusta Water-Wheel. The water-wheel sytem was built in 1895 to supply water for the stone masons of the lighthouse and water to the lighthouse-keepers' cottages. The water is supplied by a natural fall from a spring that exists in marshland approximately 330 metres away, which in turn created a flow over the wheel which revolved and activated a ram pump to deliver water by pipe to the lighthouse area. To see their ingenuity and creativity is amazing. The water-wheel is now 'frozen' in calcified limestone but its still a beautiful sight to see! From here we have decided to drive to Pemberton.
