Rügen Island is Germany's largest island and is a popular holiday destination, as it was during the Second World War where many high ranking German officers came for relaxation. We have stopped in a quite little village on the south side Sedorf. Due to the changeable whether we have stopped 2 nights giving us a day to explore the south of the island. We have been out on the bikes covering some 20 kilometres. Day 2. We have cycled into the town of Sallin here we can catch a narrow gauge steam train ( Rasender Roland ) it's 120 years old and 24 kilometres long the gauge is 750mm, the 3 engines in use every day are very powerful with 10 driving wheels, they need to be as there are a few good inclines on the track also all 10 carriages are so full we were unable to get a seat, more like London at rush hour! Not a problem for us as we were able to stand outside on the open area by the steps next to the engine almost like a footplate ride, we would have been out there even if the train was empty. The train took us from coast to coast, with our day rover ticket we were able to hop on and off as we wanted as long as we got back before the last train which stopped for the night at 23.27. One interesting stop was at a Royal hunting lodge Jagdschloss Granitz. Built in the 1700s we climbed to the top of the tower for fantastic views over the island. Every year we end up climbing up a very high scary spiral staircase, last year a church in Copenhagen, this year a hunting lodge in Germany.
