We sailed from Poland through the inland waterway Peenestrom a distance of some 50 NM there are 2 bridges on route, both times we had to anchor in the river for a couple of hours till they opened. The rivers connect lakes that are only a few metres deep so a careful watch on our route was needed. We anchored overnight in one of the lakes before moving on to Peenemünde the next day, after a night of rain and thunder. As we were just leaving we saw a huge white tailed sea Eagle taking a quite large fish from the sea, the sailing was good with some close ( racing ) with other yachts and the daytime weather good. At Peenemünde we had a choice a fully serviced Marina or on the village side an old ww2 harbour complete with submarine and M T B Boats, we chose the later, there was no fuel or water but we had access to the whole island, we spent most of the day in the German wartime research and development site for the V1 and V2 missiles, this site is considered to be the birthplace of modern space flight. It was also the target of the largest single bombing raid by the allied forces in WW2. We then took off on our bikes exploring the rest of the site taking us on a 20 klm ride, we saw many of the old buildings, air raid shelters, old railways and concentration camps, most are falling down and in a bad state with trees growing up through them. Because this was the old East Germany under Russian control places like this have just been left untouched. We tried to find the launch sites for the rocket testing but we were getting more and more into uncharted areas with some signs in German that did not look like an invite to explore. I had visions of us ending up being arrested and sent to Siberia. An interesting fact about the V bombs is that it was the only weapon that cost more lives to make than it claimed, over 2000 people died in the manufacture of them, mostly forced labour. We enjoyed a meal out by the harbour, so nice to be able to eat out unlike up in Sweden where the cost is so prohibitive.
