Lübeck is 11 miles up the River Trave from the sea and is one of the main Hislanic towns dating back to before 1200. It was once the 2 nd largest city in Germany but others have overtaken it. There are many old buildings, some having to be rebuilt after WW2 when they were damaged by bombing and subsequent fires. There is a lifting bridge to get in to the city marina about half a mile downstream, this opens at 9.30 12.30 and 17.00. From our anchorage it’s 8 miles, we decided on the early lift to go in and the late one to leave. This gave us two full days to explore the city with just one night in the marina. We are still having amazing weather with temperatures in the day of almost 30 degrees, going into the cool interiors of the old buildings was a welcome change to the heat of the streets. Unfortunately swimming in the canal/ city moat was not on as there is no flow and the water looked dirty. There are a couple of lakes in the centre that the locals swim in but we found theses too late so we enjoyed a swim off the boat when we arrived back to the anchorage, the water temperature had gone up another couple of degrees as well. I thought it would be nice to go out for a meal, having heard about this restaurant. Schiffergesellschaft Zu Lübeck. It was Tuesday evening, lucky as it closes on Mondays and is almost impossible to get in at the weekend. The buildings are 600 years old, it was a meeting place for the fishermen of the time where they ate and drank. We thoroughly enjoyed the meal and the town.
