After a good night we drove through to Fitzroy Crossing this morning. Straight to the information centre then across the single lane bridge over the river and up river to the old causeway crossing. The crossing is closed as the water is too high and the track down to it is washed away. As no one was around we had a bath and washed our hair.
Went to the hotel and had an early lunch in the park across the road. Suddenly at 12 o'clock Aborigines just wandered in from all directions, seeming to come from no where. It dawned on us that the hotel has just opened. Then quite a few taxis turned up. As we drove off they were still walking in from miles away. We learnt it is payday for them.
Drove around the town a bit, a lot of modern houses but in very ordinary condition, dirty and unloved.
Went to the old cemetery site, appears as though they've been moved to the new cemetery. This site is at the top of a cliff face overlooking the river, very beautiful but erosion has cut through what was the cemetery.
Across from the information centre a couple were operating a portable rock climbing setup, it was excellent and really interesting watching the young Aboriginal kids having fun.
We headed back on the highway to the Tunnel Creek turn off looking to camp in an old quarry. On the way in we turned down a track and wound our way into a gorge and found a cave up one of the hill faces, might go back tomorrow and check it put.
Then found the camp at the old mine/quarry, quite a number of people camped here, although where we are you wouldn't know anyone else was around. We have a magnificent view from our camp of this huge quarry full of water, it will be interesting to see what animals come in at day break.
Had a chat to some of the campers, as you do you gradually learn more of the good things to see in our travels.
