Just pulled off the road tonight, between Ularring and Ora Banda, it got dark on us.
Into Leonora this morning, a more alive, kinda real place with the indiginous walking around and people going about their business in a very countrified way. Had a good walk about town, then headed out to the ghost town of Gwalia, a really interesting old place. We walked through many old houses and a girls boarding house and what was the hospital. They are all just left open to walk through and they have left lots of the old things in them to make them look like they would have been in 1900 although I suspect more like 1960 when Sons of Gwalia was going full strength, think that was abandoned in 1963.
We enjoyed checking the place out. Then headed east a bit to Malcolm, nothing there although there is an active mine now, and then south to Kookynie. Just before we reached the tourist area we turned off to what looked like some abandoned houses. We had a good look around and found that this was the homestead of a 150,000 hectare station that had been abandoned not that long ago. The maintenance schedule for the station vehicles was still written on the wall. An interesting old place, you just knew they would have been doing it tough.
Kookynie is another ghost town, very touristy. We went on to Menzies, drove straight through and out the dirt road to Ularring, just over 100kms. Along the way we stopped to see if a vehicle that was pulled up was okay, turns out it was the local station owner (Riverina Station), an old bloke who said he was just "kicking a few thistles out". Told us that even though there had been a lot of rain the place was still very dry. warned us to be careful with our dog as he had put out thousands of baits for wild dogs and dingoes, appears as though they are a major problem across a vast area of Australia.
Onto Ularring Soak, Rose was pretty disappointed, thought the flora would have been much more interesting. Went for a walk to a Cairn on top of a mini Uluru type rock. Ernie Giles had had a blue with the aboriginals here in about 1900 over the water.
We decided to keep going, got a bit confused about what road to take at one stage, the one we really wanted was closed, I think we eventually got back on that track and are heading in the right direction now.
Just on dark we pulled over to camp for the night. Back to Kalgoorlie tomorrow.
