After shopping Tuesday morning we headed east on the Gibb River Road. Just drove a couple hundred kilometers and camped on the side of the road at Yammera Gap. It is quite a picturesque gap on the range that is the first after the miles of flat land of the coast. Had a walk, they have a modern diesel water pump quite high up on a stand probably to avoid floods, saw a couple of Roos.
Wednesday we drove on, on the very corrugated gravel road although they tell me it's worse at the eastern end. We turned off and drove in to Adcock Gorge it was very pretty, didn't have to walk far and saw some people having a swim. Met a young couple from Adelaide and had a chat with them.
Then on to Galvins Gorge where we camped for the night. The gorge is about a kilometer from the car park which is right on the road. We were joined by a van with a broken leaf spring, it was a duel axle and he was able to tie it so as he would be able to get going.
Thursday morning we continued on our way stopping at the Barnett store then turning off to go into Barnett River Gorge, another twisty turny track in then a good walk to the gorge. There was a 4wd tour bus there with a number having a swim, Rose joined them. After lunch we turned off to Mt Elizabeth Station. It's about 30kms in on a terribly corrugated road with a number of fairly steep creek crossings. We booked in for the night ($30) and went for a walk. Lots of old vehicles and machinery around, pretty interesting. Quite a number of small kangaroos that were very tame, a number of beautiful peacocks and some chooks. We watched a couple of blokes breaking horses and a girl being coached on horse riding.
This morning we drove out to Wannamurra Gorge, it's a 10km what we've seen as graded extreme 4wd track. I suggested to Rose that 30km north of half way along the Gibb River Road probably wasn't the best place to start extreme 4wding in a VW, anyway it was a doddle easier than the track into the station. It was a very rocky track and I did bend a mudflap. The carpark is about 2kms from the gorge, a nice walk in but a very long walk back to the van. It's an interesting river and gorge. Rose had a swim and we walked further downstream to view a number of Wandjina aboriginal paintings, they were pretty good. We felt for a group of older people we passed as we walked back at about midday, it was going to be a very hot day for them.
We went back had lunch and a shower and headed off. The track out was really rough although the creek crossings weren't that bad. We have stopped tonight with a number of other campers on the edge of the Hann River.
