Happy Birthday Wendy! xx Katharine woke up early this morning needing the toilet and dragged me out of bed - it meant I got to see a stunning sunrise and then went back to bed for another couple of hours! We let the kids have a day off school today and after breakfast drove up the coast to Cape Tribulation. The only way to access Cape Trib from here is by taking a cable ferry across the Daintree River. It only took 5 minutes to cross the river and we were lucky as there was no queue. The drive to the Cape was very pretty. We watched a farmer harvest his sugar cane at the start of the trip and saw a tea plantation along the way. Although only 50 kms away it took us an hour to get there as in places the speed limit was 20 kph, speed bumps where everywhere and the road was very winding. At Cape Tribulation we bought an ice cream and then took it to the beach. The sun was shining so we put up the A-Frame we bought in SA months ago and still hadn't used. Luckily for us a South Australian was sitting on the beach right next to us and he showed us how to put the thing up. The tent worked a treat and despite it being quite windy it stayed in placed! The water was a bit clearer then at Wonga and really warm so we all had a swim but took turns in watching for crocs! The kids loved it and in between swims we played beach cricket. Not long after setting up the A Frame a massive black cloud came from behind us and it looked like we would get soaked but it broke up quite quickly and the rain never happened. After a couple of hours the beach became really busy as tour bus after tour bus poured in so we packed up and moved on. We drove down to Thornton Beach Kiosk and had some hot chips and coffee - delicious - and had planned on another swim but it had become overcast and the beach was no better then Wonga so instead we headed home. Just before reaching the ferry crossing we saw a Cassowary, which had popped out of the rainforest. A thousand cameras appeared from all the tour buses on both sides of the road, mine included!! Back at Wonga, the kids ran off to the beach and spent the rest of the afternoon building a shelter with sticks and palm tree branches. Nick made dinner and then everyone had a shower when it began to get dark and we all watched some Sunday night TV.
