This morning we left the little township of Quinninup after a planned one night stay. The drive through this part of the country is really beautiful, so we decided to take a detour through the Giant Trees Tourist Drive. This route is a well maintained gravel road but it was like driving on marbles, very loose and a challenge with the caravan in tow, slow and steady was the go. At one stage we were dawdling along a straight stretch of road at about 40km/h when a very big Kangaroo came bounding out of the bush right across in front of us, I braked but there was no stopping our set-up very quickly on the very loose surface, even at the low speed that we were travelling, thankfully the big Roo darted back off the road just before we collided and then crossed again a little further up. It was the closest we have come to hitting a Kangaroo, so far, on this trip! The forests of giant trees are simply amazing and it was so nice to drive through with the windows down taking in the entire experience. Back onto the main highway again, and a few kilometres down the road, we came across the turnoff to Fernhook Falls. This road was also a gravel road with a very loose surface. It took us to the car park of Fernhook Falls camping area. We took the 800m return walk past the very brackish Fernhook waterfall and along the stream leading to Rowels Pool. Swimming is ok in Rowels Pool, but the water was so dark it was almost black! A couple of boys were swimming and one of them put his head under the water and you couldn't see him at all! Not our idea of a nice swimming area. When we got back to our caravan we decided to make a cuppa and have a bite to eat before moving on. We decided not to continue on the dirt road as we were getting some dust coming into the caravan through the back window, so we drove out the same way to the sealed main road and continued south-east. We had planned to stay in the township of Walpole, but we decided to continue on to Denmark. We have now booked in for two nights in a very nice caravan park here in Denmark, and after Denmark we have booked into a caravan park in Albany, staying till Boxing Day.
