This morning we left Broome. It was actually a little sad as we liked staying there and we had been there for over a month! Broome has a very laid back lifestyle and everything is closeby. Easy living but it is expensive!
We headed south, stopping for lunch at Sandfire Roadhouse about 360km south of Broome. The Sandfire Roadhouse was set up in 1970 by a Main Roads worker who found that during a typical day on the job he was helping stranded drivers who had either broken down, run out of fuel or blown a tyre. The road at that time was a corrugated dirt road and the distance between Broome and Port Hedland was close to 600km so he applied to build a Roadhouse/Motel and as they say, the rest is history . We were planning to stay at 80 mile Beach Caravan Park, but we decided to stop further south at a 'freedom' camp at Cape Keraudren, which is about 145km north of Port Hedland, and we parked our caravan right on a cliff over looking the ocean, absolutely spectacular! A beautiful sunset literally on our door step! And we are the only ones here! When we got up after a good nights sleep we were greeted by two wild Kangaroos. One was a young Red Kangaroo and the other a female Grey Kangaroo with a small joey in her pouch. We could only see the joey moving around in the pouch we never saw it pop out. The Grey Kangaroo was so calm and trusting obviously having met people for years she allowed us to pat her gently. We gave her some water and apple and then she and her friend hopped away. Lochie loved it!
Tomorrow we plan to head inland to Karijini National Park.
