We set off this morning for Augusta on the south-western tip of Australia where two oceans meet. The Southern ocean to the south and the Indian ocean to the west. On our way we spotted wild roos and emus but only from a distance.
Augusta itself is situated on the Hardy inlet a popular place for canoeists. To the west of Augusta is Cape Leeuwin, the most south-weterly point and here it was very windy and exposed. We had a guided tour of the lighthouse and climbed 172 steps to get some spectacular views from the top. It is still a working lighthouse as the seas are treacherously rocky around this coast but it is now computerised. In the winter time this area is a popular stopping place for whales migrating from the south to warmer seas further up the coast.
We then proceded north again and drove through beautiful 'karri' forests, a native tree of Australia. They are very tall tree and do not appear to have bark on their trunks.
The Vasse Felix winery was calling me! This was set in a beautiful setting and the four wines we tasted were all delicious but much more expensive than you can buy them for in the UK. Those of you who have a little tipple of wine might also recognise the name Leeuwin as mentioned above. The Leeuwin winery was the first one established in this area of Margaret River but now I think there are about 152 wineries although not all export to the UK.
Our next stop was the Margaret River nougat shop which also produced wine! So Mick sampled the nougat and I sampled the ????
Not far from here we went to the mouth of the Margaret River where once again the river is held back from the sea by a large area of sand between the sea and the river. We saw many surfers in the sea here.
Quite a lot of driving but another excellent day.

Chris Lovely pictures, June! Hope Mick didn't eat too much nougat!
Jenny and Kim What a great day. Scenery, wildlife, food and wine. Haven't heard of the winery you mentioned. Will look in Tesco on our next visit. Are you missing school??????
