Just finished my official week as a teacher at my new Primary School.|
I am teaching P2 and P3 (7-9yrs) Reading and Writing and somedays we do Music, Art and Sport. It's difficult somedays with the language barrier but I'm getting there and shown them that they cant mess around just because I'm a white teacher - So we all know were we stand now :) They do work hard and are very keen to learn. They take so pride in how they look, always tucking theirselves in and even the school being so basic, they're very proud always sweeping, cutting the grass.
My new name now is MADAM EMMA. All ladies in Uganda are called Madam. It's polite and alot nicer at school to be called Madam Emma and not "Miss, Miss, Miss" as I know I used to say that at school :)
We cook outside on a charcoal fire, clean our clothes, cooking equipment and ourselves also outside. Each day we walk to the Boer Hole to collect our water, carrying 20L Jerry Cans, I stuggle so much. The first time I went, the local ladies laughed but the other day they saw me struggling and actually carried it all the way home for me! I was soo grateful!
Food is very basic, all carbohydrates and boring! Breakfast is bread, then runny porridge at school, Posho and Beans for lunch (Posho is boiled, solidified flour) and for dinner we have rice and vegetables. But I'm used to it and it has the right amount of energy for what we need in our busy day :)
Currently in the rainy season in Uganda. It might rain for a hour and then the sun will be blazing. When it rains though, you don't do anything! In Uganda when the heavens open you stay still. The other day at school, we all sat in the staffroom and didnt attend our lessons and yesterday we got into school at 10 instead of 8 due to the thunderstorm. It's refreshing rain though, I even showered in it last week :)
I feel already after 2 weeks that I'm a true Ugandan and feel very much at home! Everyone here is lovely, very friendly, very helpful and very importantly they have a great humour!
Don't think I'm going to be able to put many photos up, they load very slowly but hope you manage to see a few at a time :)
Lots of Love x x
