We weren't at school Monday as it was Womens Day, a public holiday.
We headed into Kampala to meet others in the group and just spent they day treating ourselves. Milkshake and pizza in New York Kitchen, then the cinema to see Invictus. It was a lovely film.
Tuesday was my first day back at school and I was actually a little nervous going back, as I had to get back into the role of teacher, back in the swing of lessons but it went just fine.
All the children were excited to see me, as I was too see them.
It's been a good week actually, no it's been better than good, I've really enjoyed myself!
My lessons have gone well, I've walked out very happy that they've understood or improved.
Muhamad in P2 has been hard work every since Vic taught him last year. But this week he's really been knuckling down, I've been sitting with him working through his letter writing and rewarding him with stickers, which he loves. I showed Jane today how his handwriting has improved and she shook my hand, thanking me :)
I'm taking P4 too, which have been fun. We're currently reading a book on a Rocket trip with monsters in. They didn't know what monsters were, so we had fun drawing them and then I had to explain what strange meant and help them to pronouce many words - They pronouce r as l and l as r.
It's hard to really write down what I've been up to in my lessons but it's been good!!
Despite this Wednesday afternoon was free activity so I played bowling with P2. Hannington had been playing up all day, so after seeing him smack Israel I sent him straight outside to collect a stone. I stood him in the corner of the room, arms up holding the stone. He was sobbing! As bad as it may sound, he should be thankful as it's better than him getting beaten. I've told other teachers about this method and hopefully they might too start to use it instead of beating with a a stick. After the lesson I wasn't sure how I did feel after punishing Hannington but I had Netball training and forgot. These kind of situations and seeing children getting beat at school etc, well you do have to forget if you want to continue without any worries.
I'm off to Rwanda tomorrow to re-new my visa. I'm going to South Rwanda to visit a school were 50,000 people were killed. So I will try to blog Sunday, although I think I might get into Kampala too late!
The sun is back! YES :) No more 'English' weather!
Lots of Love x x x
