We had packed our gear last night and made sandwiches for breakfast so we could get up and beat the heat.
We had a nice early wake up from Zane at 4.30 then it was a domino effect from there.
We set off to do the short walk at Windjana gorge but ended up doing a fair bit of the large walk. When we first got in there we spotted heaps of fresh water crocs in the water. Ben surprised me and did very well as he was worried about the crocs last night. We must have walked a good 2 -3 kms then had to do the return. Was very proud of the boys for such a great effort. Got to see heaps of bats which the boys thought were cool, but geez they really stunk. Zane had a sleep in the backpack.
We got back to camp after about 3 hours instead of the hour we were supposed to do, all guzzled heaps of drinks, cooled down a bit then into the car.
Tunnell Creek was 35km down the road. Ben stayed awake to talk to Garry as the rest of us had a sleep.
We got out into the heat and thankfully with in 5 mins we were in nice cool shade and then it was lovely and cool down in the cave. The cave went for about 750m. The kids spotted a fresh water croc in the water. Bit further around the corner we all had to wade through the water. Wasn't too deep just above my knees. Nice and refreshing!
We stopped and gave Zane some sandwich and let him have a crawl around as he was getting cranky in the backpack. He went straight for the water so we stripped him off and let him cool down. He was very happy splashing about.
We were going to have some wraps back at the car but it was way too hot and no shade. We should have made lunch and eaten in the cave.
We got back to camp and Gaz has set up the generator and turned the aircon on to cool the van down and it come up with 49 degrees in the van. All our boys are asleep in the car which is the coolest and best place for them at the moment.
It is so bloody hot! The wind is scorching hot and even the taps and showers on cold have very warm water so not much of a cool down. I was thinking back to all the years that I worked out in the heat.........bloody crazy I was :)
In the arvo the Ranger stopped for a chat and told us it was 46.
I had bought ribs to do in the camp oven but I don't think we are going to get a chance to have a fire now as at the moment it's total fire ban. So I cooked up some yummy Jack Daniels Smokey BBQ ribs on the stove top and in the oven for a couple hours and we had that with salad for tea. It was an early night all round as the vans were the coolest place to be and I think we were all heat zapped.
