Soongies' Great Adventure
Rod, who was the Duty Instructor on site for the day, came and knocked on our door this morning to let us know he was driving out a group to Castlewellan Forest Park and offered us a lift. There were about 3 groups of 20 people staying on site this weekend and one group was heading off to do canoeing at Castlewellan Lake. Kate, Eva, Stef and Calvin jumped in the Greenhill bus and got a lift out to Castlewellan - the same place where we used to do canoeing 10 years ago. Castlewellan is a beautiful park with a large lake, a castle which now functions as a Christian conference centre, a large forest twined with many mountain biking trails, and a large hedge maze. It was quite windy and cold but we warmed up by walking around the lake while the kids on session got cold and wet during their canoeing. We had time to go up to the maze for a bit of a race - the idea was to split up to see who could get to the end first but Kate didn't want to get too lost so she followed Calvin. Eva went a separate way at the start but wound up joining Calvin and Kate and the three of us found our way to the end first only to find that the Peace Bell (the bell you're meant to ring once you get to the end) was gone! It was stolen by some delinquents a while ago. Stef made it to the end a few minutes later. We got a lift back in the bus to Greenhill. Some of the kids were sopping from canoeing - Rod asked if they were cold and one of the kids replied, "Am I cold? I'm Baltic!" which was a funny expression, particularly when spoken in a Northern Irish accent! Back at Greenhill, we made ourselves some lunch in our cabin - potato farls with some eggs and mushrooms. We headed up to the dining hall to have a chat with Ryan - he was training to be a cook 10 years ago at Greenhill and is now employed as the head chef by the centre! Rod offered to drive us out to Tollymore Forest Park for the afternoon. Tollymore Forest Park is a stunning area at the foot of the Mournes. Apparently, some of Game of Thrones was filmed here. 10 years ago, we used to do bouldering up the river in this park. We walked beside the river - up one side and down the other, crossing the river on some stepping stones at a small weir. Lots of people and dogs about. We tried to find the Arboretum in the park as that was the place where Game of Thrones was filmed but after walking around a bit, we gave up. Back at Greenhill, we met up with Michael and Kelley (also volunteered in 2007) and their kids Evie and Becca. A short walk down through the forest to the south side of Newcastle town brought us to Harbour Inn where we all had dinner. Kate and Calvin both ordered fish pie which didn't look very big but was extremely filling - cod, haddock and salmon covered with a thick layer of grilled cheesy potato mash! Stef, of course, had her favourite sweet chilli cheese chips. After dinner, we said goodbye to the family of Smiths and made our way to The Anchor, a small pub, to play some pool. The pool tables were busy but we played a few games of foosball and darts. Eva was the best at both! Christina and her boyfriend, Chris met us at The Anchor for a short while before we piled into Christina's car for a drive up to the centre. Christina hadn't seen the centre for ages so all the new buildings were new to her - Calvin, Stef and Eva took her and Chris on a tour before they headed off.
