On the 22nd we headed for Kalgoorlie through leinster and leonora. This would be again a day of many different contrast. We were to travel through some ghost towns as well as the regional mining towns. I was expecting to see some houses still standing in the ghost towns but if we hadn't seen the signs naming the towns we would've missed them. Both only had the cemetries off to the side of the road and very over grown. Would've liked to have stopped and read some of the stones but have a truck driver for a husband who goes into drive mode.
Leinster and Leonora were small regional towns with all the basics. Just out of Leonora is Gwalia which is basically a ghost town with the houses still standing and the occasional 20th century house thrown in. Gwalia is only 4 km from Leonora and still has an operating open cut mine at which a museum has been built on one side where President Hoover of the USA had had a home built while he was a manager there in his early 20's.
It was a great stop over point to look at the old mining museum. Also starting to get really cool again back on with the winter clothing. Mind you Carey not ready to give up his shorts yet.
From Leonora we headed into familliar territory for both of us. The next town was Menzies which we had both been to when visiting our son Chris when he lived in Kalgoorlie and we went out to see the scultptures at lake Ballard. Nothing had really changed from here it wasn't far into Kalgoorlie.
I had booked us into a hotel in Hay street which I knew was the original brothel street. Well to our surprise the hotel I had booked us into was actually a brothel the first time we visited Kalgoorlie not so sure about on our next visit. As the history goes both Hoover and Alan bond were suppose to have had meetings there as it was more of an upper class gentlemens club. So thats something to say we've done. We can also say we had the madams room. lol
We had tea in Hannan street which was busy as Kalgoorlie has the biggest population in the Gold mining region. Not a bad meal. We then headed back to the hotel for the night. Not a good sleep as on the opposite corner of the street was a 24 hour servo and cars and trucks were in and out it seemed all night. Our bedroom windows were out onto the street. Oh well was the only bad real bad sleep we had all trip.
