The day started off beautifully with the sunrising over the river. The birds welcoming the morning and locals taking their boats out.
We headed firstly for a petrol station before commencing our day of travel that was to be 373km but turned into over 400km and only going to 1 of the attractions i had planned.
The Bp petrol station was a nice surprise. They fill your tank for you and have been doing so for the last 17 years. All I had to do was pay.
We then headed towards Walpole and The valley of the Giants. At this stage we only travelled through the odd shower. It remained the same while we were there. Thankfully as we went on the skywalk which at its highest point is 40 metres off the ground. The skywalk was swaying a little as we walked each span between the platforms and more so the higher we got. It was really okay.
We then headed to the forest floor and walked along a boardwalk that has been setup to protect the trees. The tingles have very shallow roots for huge trees. We were able to walk through the centre of some of these trees as they have been eaten out by fire, fungi and bugs. There are even photos of cars in the bases ofsome of the tingles.
Carey also found some painted rocks that had been placed by people from the WA rocks group for people to find. I took photos and left them to be found by others.
We then headed to Walpole for coffee and a car sticker as the Valley of the Giants centre didn't have any. The rain then decided to start and did it come down. Made for an interesting trip. The road went up and down and curved one way or the other. Then we would reach sections which were straight and you could travel at 100 before quickly going back to 80 or 90. Carey said Ishould footnte this saying I would've been happy if it was 80 all the way. He is probably right.
We then turned off the south coastt highway to head for Pemberton where I had wanted to see the Gloucester tree. Didn't happen as at about 30km along this road we encounted a fallen tree. We then had to turn around and head back to the south coast highway and head for Margaret River a totally different way. We also missed Cape Leeuwin as by this stage we just wanted to find somewhere to eat and rest for the night.
Found It hard to find places to get food on the actual hghway.
Had a lovely, expensive tea at a place called Katchup in Magaret River. It was worth every cent.
