On the 21st we headed for Sandstone. So we stayed on the great northern highway until we reached mount magnet before turning east onto the mount magnet sandstone road. I had planned everything using the sealed roads. It wouldve been more straight forward to use the meekatharra to sandstone road but that like many roads in the centre of western australia are unsealed.
On leaving Meekatharra we headed for Mount magnet. Just under 200km away. The first surprise for me was leaving Meekatharra and finding that on either side of the highway were 2 open cut mines. You were unable to see into them as the dirt had been built up on the highway sides and also fenced. Up until now the mines have been well away from the highways.
The road like all the roads so far in western australia was in very good condition. Some people would've called the drive boring but you need to look around at all the flora and fauna to really appreciate the landscape. The wildflowers weren't as numerous on this stretch as we would led to believe but still got to see some pretty sights that an artist would've liked to paint.
At Mount Magnet we turned east and headed to Sandstone a shire of just 105 people in the 2015 census. We weren't expecting much. New the town had a caravan park and the local pub. I had booked us into the local Pub which was a great choice. It was lovely place to stay. They had several Dongas setup out the back for the miners and tourist to stay in. Had another great sleep.
We went on a heritage drive at Sandstone and saw some interesting things. Got to see a london bridge formation that wasn't created by the sea. Ray Martin had actually been there in his heyday as a report on the Television. We also saw the original old brewery which was in a cave near the original mining and battery site.
