Today we started with a visit to Heritage Park and the National Anzac Centre on Mount Adelaide. It was very interesting to learn about the leaving of Australia in 1914 by Australian and New Zealand forces heading for Gallipoli and Palestine. To here the reports of how the ships found it difficult to stay in formation and not light themselves up at night which would make them visible to enemy ships for miles. It was nice to have your own soldier o learn about as you travelled around the exibition. I was given a soldier born in the same area of the Uk as myself but who had migrated to Tasmania with his parents. He was 21 when he headed to Gallipoli as a corporal. Qver 41,000 soldiers left from Albany.
We then headed for Denmark only 53km from Albany. Here we visited several beaches in the rain. The closest being 9km from the town centre of Denmark. Beautiful views across the bay. Saw 3 guys surfing in the rain.
We then headed 13.5km out to William bay road to go and see elephant rocks and green pools. We had been told by some locals in Albany to go see Elephant rocks. So glad we went it was a lovely experience. We went down stairs having no idea where they went wnd found a cutting between 2 rocks to get out onto the beach. The tide was up so we did not go threw as you had to be quick to avoid getting wet as the occassional wave would come in between the rocks. At this point a little bird also liked to sit and talk to us. We went back up and headed over to look at green pools. At this point I'm sure an albatross was flying above us. I was able to get a photo but it is not clear enough to confirm this.
We then headed back to Denmark along the south coast highway with large trees either side of us. Has been quite a few days since weve seen large trees growing naturally. Those we have seen around Esperance and towards Albany were planted in forestries.
We arrove at our accommodation for the night. Beautiful. Our view from the deck is of the rivermouth with lots of Pelicans. Feels like being in a small house tonight,
