We travelled 366km today to reach eighty mile beach. It was a long road with lots of caravans travelling both ways going to the different places along the route.
The first part of our trip was from Karratha to Port hedland a mere 240.8km. There is one actual place to stop a pub accommodation called Whim Creek. Interesting little setup near a mine.
Port hedland is another mining/port town. It is an elongated town along the coast. Not as clean or as well set up as Karratha. It was interesting to watch the ships in the harbour being loaded and taken out to sea. Also to see both mine trains and 4 trailer road trains.
Back on the road we headed towards Broome and stopped at Pardoo roadhouse to stretch our legs before heading for eighty mile beach which is 10km of the highway down a dirt road.
What a beautiful welcoming caravan park. A real little community of people. Some staying long term during the dry to others just stopping in for the night. If your not into fishing or just sitting around all day with the daily walk along the beach the place isn't for you for any length of time.
We had a none powered site for the first night there in the tent. The people around us were lovely. Those right behind us were from SA. They actually new one of Careys uncles from the Deep Creek area in SA.
We then moved 30 metres to a powered site for 3 nights which ended up being only 2. Discovered that I am not good at just sitting around and thought we would be better off in a town where we could do more.
We did go for a lovely 20 km drive up the beach and collected some amazing shells. We also watched fisherpersons bringing in rays and sharks which had to be put back into the water. The beach maybe in the middle of nowhere but the fisheries are there regularly ensuring that everything is done correctly.
We got to watch 3 amazing sunsets with some wonderful travellers that were all there for the same experience.
We also got to listen to some talented grey nomad singers at the wednesday market. They hold a lttle market twice a week.
Its a place Carey is hoping to return to with my blessing to do some fishing.
