Happy Easter! We put on our Sunday Best.... Which was whatever was cleanest and least smelly and headed to the Cathedral.... When we arrived there was no line up to see St James.... So we went up and mom brought all the intentions and gave him a hug....there was a mass going on so we went out to the square to hang out for a while watching other pilgrims arrive.... We went back in at 1030 and the place was filling up.... Word was out that they would be doing the Botafumiero which is a large incense thingy that historically was used because the pilgrims smelled so bad when they arrived that they would de-stench them.....they do not do it on any given day and generally save it for special occasions....us being there was certainly a special occasion... Ok ok so it is Easter Sunday! So I found myself a place to stand on the base of a column and mom went and found a seat....the place was packed....I was kinda up on a perch and out of the mass mayhem of people pushing to get the closest look...I guess they didn't realize it was going to be swung from the center of the cathedral and we all would be able to see it!! Well when they put the incense in and started to swing it, it was amazing.... The guy swung it higher and higher almost hitting the ceiling on either side of the cathedral.... You could hear the gasps coming from either side as it swung over the peoples heads..... Amazing! They let it swing less and less and this man stepped out and grabbed it, swung in a circle a couple times and it was done.....Easter Sunday Mass followed....a High Latin Mass by the Bishop of Santiago and the Gregorian music suited for the occasion.....Hanny will be happy to know I stayed for the whole two hour mass! We headed back to our room and had an old skool Goodman hotel room picnic.... A rest and headed back out to the explore the old city..... Sat in a park..... And a cafe having a cafe con leche of course!! We headed up to the Praza de Quintana as there was another procession.... Procession do Cristo Resucitado.....it was taking forever to get going, last night it was two hours late so we decided to go for supper... No ham and potato salad for us.... When in Spain .... Eat Greek !! There is a little Greek restaurant across from our hotel..... Finished up with perfect timing to see little angels spreading flowers in the street for the statue of the resurrected Jesus..... Along with a band of drums, trumpets and bag pipes playing triumphant music.... Followed by a statue of Mary with the black veil lifted covered in beautiful flowers and real live doves.....a perfect end to our Easter Sunday..... Mom says it was a very good day.... We can still hear the beat of the drum and the bag pipes as the procession continues through the streets....I am off to Finisterre tomorrow on my own....looking forward to seeing the end of the earth or so it was thought once upon a time.....
