We stayed for 2 nights at the Red Rock campground in the Byfield NP which is just north of Yeppoon opposite Great Keppell Island. The campsites were spacious and shady and there was only a couple of other campers at the campground.
Initially we tried to drive some of the 4wd tracks around the State Forest/NP but after struggling up one large sand dune we decided to turn back. Instead we visited the lovely Upper Stony Creek campsite in the State Forest/NP and I had a refreshing swim in the creek. The campsite was empty so we had the creek to ourselves. Our camping book suggested campers book for this campsite because it can get busy however when we drove in there was no-one there. I think we will ignore this advice from now on.
I took the dirt bike out for a spin around the forest tracks near the campground. It was great place to ride and I was having a lot fun until I came off. I was going around a sweeping corner on what appeared to be a nicely graded track when suddenly it deteriorated to a mess of washouts and rocks. This was too much for my skill level so off I came. Fortunately I only received a few bruises and scrapes. The bike had bent handlebars and gear lever but I managed to limp back to the campsite.
