We were on our way to Townsville when we decided to take a turn off into Alligator Creek camp ground in Bowling Green Bay National Park. We were a little concerned about camping in a place called 'Alligator' Creek but then we realised there are no alligators in Australia. We just need to avoid any campgrounds called 'Crocodile' Creek. Alligator Creek turned out to be a great campground and we ended up staying 3 nights. The creek was a nice spot for a swim although we never really lost our fear that an alligator would suddenly grab us by the leg. Fortunately, we didn't see any alligators (or crocs) but there was lots of other water life including fish, turtles and one large eel. When you entered the water the fish would swim around your feet. Kylie was worried she would step on them. I think the fish were expecting to be fed.
We got to know our neighbours Barry and Pat from Kingaroy. There were farmers who were taking a well earned rest from the farm. Barry had completely refitted a (Ford?) Bedford van for travelling. He had done all the work himself including fitting a new holden 186 engine. It was very impressive.
We attended the Anzac Dawn Service at the local Bowls club. It included a free feed and cheap drinks including milk and rum for $2. The only problem I had was when the audience was asked to sing the nation anthem. Like a lot of Australians I don't know even know the first verse (something about 'girt by sea'?). Fortunately Kylie knows the words and we were saved any embarrassment. Although if have ever heard Kylie sing you would not think me fortunate.
From here it's just a 30 minute drive to Townsville.
