Today had breakfast at the Bakery on the harbour front, love the laid-back feel of this place with 'real people' not just tourists like us!
We then loaded up with water & lunch from the bakery for our picnics & headed out onto the road towards the peninsula on the west side. I know this is traveling from the east to the west coast, but the island is quite small! We left about 845 driving up into the hills and over to the west with glorious views of a very rough Myrtos Beach. The wind was sure blowing down there!
By 9 we arrived at Lixouri quite a largish town on the peninsula for a coffee break. The town square was hustling & a fab coffee and milkshake was sampled.
My first choice of beach was Vatsa on the south west coast. It was hard red sand with a parking area behind the beach and a taverna. To be honest I just didn't like it! The wind didn't help, it was very windy, so we didn't stay long. Although sand, it was rock hard and red, I just can't get my head around red sand.
Traveling further north staying on the west coast we stayed at my next beach on the list, Lagadakia but again the wind was against us and the sea not suitable for snorkelling. However, this was a small cove with small parking as the road ended with large boulders. We liked this small cove, it had character, over hanging rocks for shade and pebbles, boy are pebbles so much more comfortable to lie on than sand! We never believed that until we started touring Greek islands! Plus, pebbles do not get into areas of your body where it is not welcome!!
So, we stayed here for a couple of hrs. Then off we go again, yes, I don't stay still for long, and continued our adventures. Further up the coast we come to Petani beach. A large sweeping bay with some beautiful coloured waters. The sea was very very rough making it quite spectacular driving down to the aqua seas crashing against the rocks.
A few tavernas line the part of the beach which is sandy. No one, I mean no one was in the sea. The waves crashing on the shoreline were enormous!! We sat and watched as others arriving did until one person very carefully dipped his toes. The current was very very strong, so you had to be careful. Russ went in but only to experience the waves crashing, most certainly didn't go out of his depth or above his knees. Though when those large waves came crashing in the depth of the water very soon rose.
We caught some great photos and videos, had a laugh and made our return to A.E at 430 and by 6pm was out for our evening meal and cocktails.
