Head out with the car today to Argyroupoli to discover traces of the Ancient City Lappa. It’s not far from Rethymno, 30 km and the ride take us into the hills, we never get fed up, of these rides, the views, the village lives, the smells.
Lappa I read is spread around the upper village, excavations have been hard as today’s houses are many, you can find Roman remnants, Venetian buildings and the Byzantine churches with lower Argyroupoli known for the famous springs.
We stroll around the village looking out for remains being built into the newer village. The tombs just below the village are like at Matala and quite a few have been excavated for you to see down by the small church and along the river.
We then rode to the springs and wow, this is commercial! After the laid-back village life to coach and cars at the springs it was a bit of a shock!
I didn’t actually know where to find the springs as it just seemed to be the tavernas turning them into water features. We followed the water trail up until I found the source amongst a tavernas terraces. Here it appeared the water was coming through a tiny alcove of the rock face, bubbling away.
We did eat there as next place we chose was Bali for a bit of a read. Wish now we had returned to the upper village. Still the home-made meat balls were delicious and very large portions.
On looking for a beach to go to we decided on one of the Bali beaches. A friend had recently visited and their friends have a house here told them it was a pretty resort......emmm
We headed for Karavostasis which is the last beach of the Bali 4 and the most beautiful, so I read, so we locate it and let google take us there. As we drive off the highway we can see Bali is quite a resort yes, with everything you need to keep you there. Pretty? Emmmmm....
When we reach our destination, we are disappointed to find a small cove smothered with sun beds. You could hardly see the sand there were that many. My heart dropped, but it is past 2 and we want some chill time, the sun is out so we decide to stay.
We ignore how close the sun beds are, the screaming children and just chill with our Kindles. I am engrossed with my book so I do manage to, ignore all around me!
I see lots of people snorkelling so have to have a look even though the sea is quite rough. Alas nothing to see, the water is deep, not very clear and just a few fish.
When the sun disappears so do we. Enjoyed the day having a mooch and reading but would not return to Bali.
We went into the old town much later and ate at 1600 Raki Ba Raki and strolled through the streets finding a funky bar playing jazz. The town is hustling with young and old, we love just wandering the streets being a part of it.
Loved Rethymno but tomorrow it’s time for us to leave and head to, our final destination, The Balos Hotel.
