The wind has not eased, it is blowing gusts of 30mph. We take breakfast at our last place
Sante Irene, very good too, savoury crepe for me, coffee and orange juice.
We walk like 2 crippled people, our calves are rock hard from the Gorge walk, so painful! Walking once we get going is not so bad but going down steps, OUCH!
By 930 we are on route up and over the mountains to the north coast. Russ takes it very careful and I feel fine, dozing quite a bit due to my early mornings so far. As we hit the top of the range the cloud descends but no where as bad as it was a few years back with our friends. I doze even more now and by no time at all about 1.15hrs, we reach the highway on the north coast.
Stop off at Ancient Aptera which is certainly worth a visit. Do go into the building by the toilets where there is a video guide on the site. It explains and shows what the buildings would have looked like, very good, especially the Ancient theatre. The cisterns are enormous, I think Rhodes was the last time we saw like these.
We continue on to Georgioupolis to walk the cause way to the church, we are tourists after all. The sea is very rough and I have spotted the church and waves crashing so as we park I suggest we get changed. Russ has no idea where we are going but gets changed as I suggest! As we near he ask if we really are goi g to walk over as we watch other people in the middle part get covered in waves!
So off we go, don’t know whether it’s an age thing or what with me these days but I didn’t like it one bit. One stretch the waves crashed from either side of us and we had to keep stopping so we could see where to place our feet! I closed my eyes as they crashed against us! Russ was very good, he would watch the waves and tell me when to move and when to stand still!
By the time we reach the church I am wet through! Going back was not so bad, we had a a system going and I was not so scared!
We get changed and walk to the waterfall square for a Gyros before heading on our way to Rethymno and Herbs Home, our next accommodation.
We use What’s App to talk to our host. She sends us location to meet her which is outside the library, this is where the apartment block is and underground parking. She explains everything and takes us up to from the garage.
It is spacious and we are amongst locals living here. It has views of the Fortress and sea. It took us 10 mins to walk along the front to the old town and we start to investigate. The host suggested a courtyard where the locals go, her included, Alvi I think it was. Fab little place, courtyard full of lime, grapefruit trees and vines. We ended up eating tapas there and a few glasses of very nice wine. As we were about to leave the waitress brought over another round, saying it was on the house. We could hardly refuse so we sat back and enjoyed eventually we do tear ourselves away to enjoy the small streets of the old town. Really like the feel of this city. We stumble on a group of students having an impromptu open mike night, the vibe is just great. Next stumble is the hustle and bustle of the streets is the
Rimondi Fountain which was built in 1626 by the city''s Rector A. Rimondi. It covered part of the city''s water needs and it is located in the Platanou square, which was then the centre of the Venetian city.
I am shattered but do not want to go back, everywhere is so alive so we stop for one last drink and I have a chocolate waffle. You know what it’s like when you are quite merry on good wine, you just need something sweet. The waffle comes and is enormous!
An excellent day and really loving Rethymno.
