Up and ready for the day, set up by breakfast costing €6 each with Faye (which was worth the cost! Toast, jam, coffee, orange juice. Water, eggs, cake, yoghurt and melon!!!) we set off for Ancient Thira. I had taken note off a forum post to say go via Kamari side as you could drive to the site. Well, when looking at the map, what a road! As we approached you could see the cliff road very tight and extremely steep full of hair pin bends. The road is patched and Tarmac at the top, we passed a few people walking, well fare play to,them!! It has around 20 bends! I felt as sick as a dog when we finally reached the top. The sheer drops at my side made me incredibly nervous. I just couldn't wait to get out of the car. It was incredible blustery at the parking place, hard to open the car door! I fought with the doors to,get my jeans and sat in front to put them on under my skirt which was blowing around my waist in the gale winds, I was even more flustered now!!
Anyway, off we set. Today was free, not sure why. The site is truly a site to see, you climb up and through the city. Their are information boards pointing out and with diagrams of what you were looking at. Some fabulous engravings still,to be seen too. We were the only ones their, not sure where everyone else was with the cars parked. It was quite magical. On our walk back down a co start trail of people were coming up. Returni g to the car I warned Russ I may have to walk part way, explaining why I was so grumpy on arrival. It is hard for drivers on these roads to understand as it is always the passenger that seems to see how close the wheels of the car are to sheer drops! So my loving husband took it very steady going down. We picked up a girl who was waving frantically at us asking for a lift. She was not fee,ing well and had left her friends at the top and was walking down. We gave her a lift to her hotel and gave her water telling her to rehydrate.
We took the ride to Akrotiri Ancient site via the hill, top villages and Kamari beach. We were going to stop off but the view of both this long black beach and Perissa totally put me off. A strip,of sand full,of sun beds backed with hotels etc just is not our kind of beach.
Spotting on the map a sign for Ancient Tombs near Vlichada we headed here instead. The tombs are not sign posted so you need a map. There are 2 hidden in the cliff reached by a narrow path in between a house and fenced farm land. I would love to know the history of them.
We continued onto the harbour and headed for the small beach on the left. The sea was not clear like we have been used to and I didn't fancy a dip. We read, ate crisp sandwiches and then confused on around 3 to Akrotiri.
Arriving at Akrotiri I read the DK info on the place and we head to in, again free this weekend.
This is definitely a Wow. The site excavated in 1967 and is totally covered by a roof and walls. The city is massive and just amazing. You can see streets, 2/3 story buildings, ceramics, pots, it truly is a spectacular site.
We spent time taking to the guides around the site and just taking the whole place in, you need a good 2 hours for this. At buyer times I would also say to wait for more people to,join to hire a guide, it is €60,so,good if you can split the price.
We headed down to a taverna on the small sea front for a coffee which was needed!
Then drove to the lighthouse. Views from this end of the island are great and stopped off at The Good Heart for dinner. Lamb and roast potatoes, steak for Russ, Coke, Mythos came to €30.
We are now returned to Pheonix sat on balcony blogging, drinking tea(for me) Russ of course, Mythos and enjoying a chocolate brownie Russ had bought for me from bakery.
Tomorrow last day before returning home.
