Drogarti Cave & Melissani Lake Agia Efimia - Cephalonia/Kefalonia Ionian 16/17th June
Kefalonia, Greece
16th not a lot to mention other than doctors with the most painful throat, as suspected I had tonsillitis so we decided to have a chill day in Skala, with me under the brolly for shade with dips in the sea to prevent myself getting a temperature. The doctor was most insistent on this, SHADE only he kept saying!! For once I listened as I didn't want to spoil the rest of our holiday! We drove into town for a Gyros at lunch time. A good one but doesn't beat the Gyros in Matala, none have yet to!
The 17th we checked out and headed to Agia Effimia visiting Drogarti cave, Melissani lake and Agia Paraskevi beach before heading to our next accommodation in the harbour village.
Within an hour of leaving Skala we were in the Drogarti cave, the largest in the Ionian islands which was discovered 300 years ago and opened to the public in 1963. It has large formations of stalactites and stalagmites and reckoned to be about 150 million yrs. old! It was a lovely 18 degrees and 60metres deep. It is about 5km south of Sami on the eastern coast. I am not sure we would have usually bothered to visit but as I needed to keep out of the sun it was great!
We then headed to Melissani Lake, this was great fun and we got there in time for the sun to be shining through the roof of the cave to give that beautiful effect of the aqua blue water. You queue for a boat and jump on with your guide along with 10 or so others, a very short ride but your 'captain' gives you a talk of the history of the cave lake pausing for photo shots. Definitely worth a visit to this little tourist attraction.
For lunch we drove along the east coast north of the lake to Agia Paraskevi beach, small pebbles with a great taverna. The food was scrumptious. We chilled on the beach for a while, dipping, reading and snorkelling, always snorkel, it fascinates me, sea life.
Arriving around 6 we checked into The Seasons of Nickolas, a small apartment block with some parking available on the side of the road. The rooms had kitchen area, twin beds and a bathroom and paid 165 euros for 4 nights. Great size room with shaded balcony and lots of little things like, coffee, umbrella for the beach even one of those snake floaty things for the water.
Enjoyed our first meal on the way to the harbour in a small taverna & a few cocktails at the harbour front. The village wasn't that busy and at some points we were the only ones in the cocktail bar. A great chilled night with tasty mojito's. Boy do I love Mojito's!!
