After seeing majority of island yesterday we planned to walk from Fira to Oia. We drove there first parking the car and walked through the very quiet streets to,find the bus stop. How I wish we had savoured this moment!!! You'll see why in a moment though I am sure you can guess!
So bus back we started the walk from the main square taking in the very views from the path in Fira. As we climbed out we could see there was quite a few of us on this walk today. The path is well warn need trainers or walking sandals as some parts are lose stones. There are a couple of cafe's on the way and we had to stop at one so I could use the toilet, €8 later we continued on!
Arriving in Oia around noon was a completely different place. It was rammed. Hated it!! As soon as we could get off the Main Street we did and found our way to the bus square and a had a Gyros €3 each very reasonable to recover from the horrible crowds. (Yes we are grumpy tourists!) .
It amazed me along the way all the exclusive hotels and villas which were so overlooked by this path! If I had paid £k's I would want privacy not to be photographed and looked at by walkers! If I were to pay that kind of money it would be back to the Maldives for sure!
We then headed to the end where you can see the remains of some original houses which were left from the 1956 earthquake.
We then headed back to the car and drove to the beach by the airport to chill. We didn't go in the sea as it was rough and stoney. Santorini certainly lacks the beautiful beaches and crystal clear waters we have found at every other Greek Island we have visited.
Top tip - walk from Fira more down hill
Wear trainers
Take water, hat etc
Go to bus square for a snack
Use proper car parks if using a car
Find the old houses ignore the crowds and try and imagine what the town used to be like before it was rebuilt for tourism
Visit before 930am
