Barden's Great Aussie Adventure 2015
We are really noticing how few travellers are here at the moment. We are about 2 weeks ahead of the start of the tourist influx. We had planned on camping at Merluna Station with a lunch stop at the creek north of Coen. We could have camped here and although it was a nice spot we would rather be at the station tonight then drive again tomorrow.
So after 6 hours including the stop we reach the turnoff for Merluna Station only to see a CLOSED FOR PRIVATE FUNCTION SIGN
staked in the middle of the road. We tried contacting them with no luck. We all had enough driving for the day but the next closest camp was Weipa 120km away so on we drove arriving just before the sun began to set.
I was surprised by the number of people here, it is by far the busiest spot we have seen on the cape. The PDR is apparently the best condition it has been in for years and we have definitely found it to be good having a fairly smooth ride. Setting up we found a fair bit of red dust inside the camper.
Weipa is the site of the world's largest bauxite mine which is the the material they use to make aluminum. The amount of aluminum that is produced is one eighth of the amount of bauxite mined. They are shallow mines with bauxite being found only a couple of meters underground so they only mine to about 4m deep.
