Barden's Great Aussie Adventure 2015
We headed down the mountain today to Finch Hatton and set up camp at Platypus Bush Camp before going 'forest flying'. The description on the internet sounded just like the one at the Daintree but I thought I would do this instead because it was less commercialised. However, driving there I realised this company was much smaller than I thought. It wasn’t just less commercialised it was in someone’s backyard and that’s what it felt like
driving in. There was no one else around and as we walked the track and scared
all the bats away a lady came casually to meet us. I was a bit skeptical as the
plan was for Matt to take the boys to town while I do this but it felt awkward
being the only one there. Anyway they were happy enough to take me by myself.
It only took 15 min total from start to finish and included 2 zip lines, one
230m & the other 110m. It was really close to trees so I was lucky I didn’t spin sideways because I was going too fast to correct it in time. But fast and
closeness was where the fun was; however I got the impression the owners thought it was too fast. The next line they told me to go slow and look at the bats. The zip line was good but was far too short for the money. On the walk up Dave also pointed out different bush tucker.
In the afternoon, we did the walk to Araluen Falls which was a really nice area and would be a great swimming spot in summer when the water is warmer.
"Wazza", the guy running the camp also seems a bit strange, a real ‘bushie’. You wouldn’t want to meet him in the dark but getting to know him I am sure he would be a good guy to know. He came over for a chat and seemed a little more normal than first impression and gave Zach an aloe vera leaf because he was stung by something on his hand when he touched a tree. Zach managed to get stung again (I think from a stinging nettle) that night after having a great time playing soccer with another kid.
Walking across stones while looking for platypus, Zach slipped into the water and said “ It’s okay, my boots are waterproof” until a moment later he discovered they weren’t if he was standing in a creek up to his knees.
There were twin girls Liam’s age which kept him the stillest and quietest I’ve ever seen him. I think he was a bit scared by them despite them being friendly to him.
At night Matt spent some time at the communal fire listening to a guy sing and play his guitar which he said was awesome.
