Happy Birthday Amanda! xx I woke up before 7 am to the sound of traffic instead of waves and it took a while to remember where I was - must be my old age!! It's much colder here in the mornings and so I stayed in bed as long as possible and the kids jumped in too when they woke up. We decided to have another day off schoolwork to go exploring and so after breakfast hit the road. We drove through Atherton and the first stop was the Curtin Fig Tree - a very pretty walk around a huge fig tree where we hoped to spot a tree kangaroo but had no luck. Next stop was Malanda Falls, which had a very inviting swimming pool but was too cold. We took the Rainforest Walk, again to spot tree Kangaroos but only saw turtles. We drove into town and found a bakery, bought lunch and ate it in the park across the road. Malanda made a great short stop. From there we drove to Millaa Millaa, a beautifully scenic drive through dairy country up in the hills - it was truly stunning! We took the Waterfall Circuit and visited Millaa Millaa Falls first. This was the busiest as the falls emptied into a very pretty swimming area and a number of people were having a dip. Next stop was Zillie Falls, which the kids enjoyed as the walk to the bottom of the falls was really muddy and they all slipped and fell over! Lastly we drove to Ellinjaa Falls, which we had all to ourselves and was the most tempting place to swim if it had been warmer. By this time we were in desperate need of a coffee so headed back into Millaa Millaa and found a great café with very tasty cakes and ice cream. Although the kids were ready to return home we decided to drive on to Ravenshoe to visit the Millstream Falls, reputedly the widest falls in Australia. We had trouble finding the falls and ended up at Little Millstream Falls by mistake and these turned out to be the best falls of the day - water tumbling from everywhere into a very inviting pool. When we finally found Millstream Falls they were a bit disappointing in comparison. It took us about an hour to get home and the kids were very ready to get out of the car. Although all the walks were short we were all fairly shattered, wolfed down a spag bol for dinner and had an early night.
