This morning, we took an audio tour through the Houses of Parliament at Westminster. It was a great thing to see. We went through both houses and a lot of other areas but unfortunately there was no photography allowed. We stood next to the Queen's throne in the House of Lords which she uses when she opens parliament. We saw the marks on the door to the House of Commons which are made by the Queen's representative, The Black Rod, when she summons the lower house. Particularly interesting was the bomb damage to the door to the Commons which Churchill had requested to be left as a permanent reminder of the war.
After that we walked around to the front of Westminster Abbey, only to find that the visitor entrance was back the way we had come on the southern end. As we had fought our way through a huge crowd, we went around the other way to get back, through the Dean's yard where there was a fete on today which was quite quaint. Anyhow, when we finally found the queue, we decided it was too long and we would come back later.
Instead, we caught a Circle Line train from Westminster to Notting Hill Gate and walked down to the Portobello Road Markets. It was really hot in the sun and there was an enormous crowd at the markets so we didn't last too long there. We caught a bus back to Victoria, had some lunch and then walked the rest of the way down Victoria Street to Westminster Abbey. By this time the queue was better, so we went for the audio tour inside which is very impressive.
From there, we walked down Horse Guards Road, saw the entrance to Churchill's War Rooms and stopped to look at the birds and squirrels in St James Park. We continued on for our last look at Trafalgar Square and finally had dinner in the Sherlock Holmes Pub. A bit of souvenir shopping on the way home and our last day in London was over.
