Today was another highlight of the holiday. We went on a tour of the Super Pit. We were lucky that it took place because the Monday and Tuesday tours were cancelled due to the torrential rain on Monday.
This pit is the 2nd largest in the world. It is 1.55km across and 3.7km long and 600m deep. It produces 22 tonnes of gold each year and current plans will see mining continue until 2021.
First we went to a lookout on the rim and it was awesome! We could see right to the bottom and the huge trucks looked like ants in places. We had to wear high-viz jackets and hard hats. Our tour guide was unsure whether we would be able to go to another lookout a little way into the pit but he managed it. From here we had slightly different views. We could see spots where they had drilled holes ready for blasting but we weren't lucky enough to experience that.
We drove around the site, passing different types of mega vehicles and saw where the rocks were processed and the gold extracted. We didn't actually see any gold of course and we weren't allowed to take any rocks as souvenirs.
The trip was well worth the money.
Tomorrow morning we leave early to catch the train back to Perth and then we will have a few relaxing days until next Thursday when we set off north of Perth to Shark Bay and Monkey Mia. The end of our trip is on the horizon now!

Dorothy & Bob That hole was made by a Scotsman looking for the £10 note he dropped down a rabbit hole.
Jenny and Kim From what you say the only way to describe it is WOW. The mine must offer a lot of excitement for the men who like driving the Mega trucks and blowing things up. Do they employ women???From your pictures the town appears very clean. Don't look at the horizon. Jenny and Kim
