Test Run
We had a slightly less busy time over the weekend but still managed to find plenty of things to do in London Town! Saturday morning began with a train trip to Hampstead to take part in the Parkrun 5km free run around Hampstead Heath which is part of the worldwide family of Parkruns. We both do this many Saturdays at home & wanted to try one in England - where it all began. Geoff ran the undulating course in a good time while I was officially last!!!!! This was a first for me but it was because I was the only walker in a field of 222 runners. I have no idea why they don't have walkers, children, dogs etc as we do at home but it meant I had a very good view of the back of the field & luckily had the company of Alistair the volunteer who tailed the field to make sure everyone finished safely. Geoff had plenty of time to chat with others while he waited for me so it was quite a social event. Saturday afternoon saw the Seven Dials area turned into a pedestrian zone & street party so we stayed around & ate food from stalls, listened to the entertainment & enjoyed the atmosphere. We also walked over to Lincoln's Inn Fields to see the museum home Sir John Soane, architect of the Bank of England & then called in to the Freemason's Hall on the way back. London is full of amazing historical places & we never tire of discovering them. Sunday we walked across the iconic Waterloo Bridge to the Imperial War Museum for a view of the First World War gallery & the British view of the major battles before we go to do our tour of the Western Front. It's an interesting display - quite different to our own in Canberra & gave us many insights into how it was to be in England or to go to the battles. There was strong emphasis on how the allies only managed to defend as they did because of all the colonial armies that came to their aid. Lunch at Borough markets & a walk back along the Embankment tired us out. Monday morning we were planning to just pack up slowly when I had a message from our friend Jenny who's in London visiting her daughter. This was a great surprise & we arranged to meet for a coffee & chat before we had to leave at midday. It was so nice to catch up with her & have a wander around the lovely area to Covent Garden - have a great trip Jenny! Train from St Pancras to Lille & suddenly we're in France staying near the railway station where we'll meet the tour tomorrow. We had a wander around the old town where most places were closed due to the holiday for Assumption Day but we found a cafe for crepes & kir - excellent!
