Test Run
Spent some time this morning in the always interesting Covent Garden markets where we enjoyed the craft market stalls & bought a few small souvenirs - they have to be small & light to fit into our luggage! There was a band busking in the lower market space with it's great acoustics, playing & dancing with a very happy baby strapped to the back of the fiddler - legs dangling, she's probably been doing this since birth! We spent most of the afternoon at the Hotel Cafe Royal on Regent Street having High Tea in the Oscar Wilde Bar with Peter & Wendy. Peter was Geoff's friend from Ramsden School for Boys in the 60's & they made contact again 2 years ago & have stayed in touch since. It was just great to see them again & share in the delicious afternoon tea & a glass of champagne (of course). The room is gorgeous with lots of mirrors, gilt & plenty of fancy touches. The food was also extravagant - savouries, scones (with clotted cream) & far too many pretty sweet treats that it was impossible for us to eat them all. We certainly hope we can catch up again in the future - they are such good company! Leaving there we wandered past the National Gallery & into St Martin in the Fields church where a classical group were rehearsing for their concert that evening. It really is delightful to be able to walk into a church & hear beautiful music by Bach - always free & accessible. From classical to rock we went to the theatre to see Sunny Afternoon - the story of The Kinks, one of the British Invasion bands from the 60's. It was great fun & we knew most of the music, even standing to sing along & clap at the end to Lola & All Day and All of the Night.
