Test Run
On the 98th anniversary of Geoff's dad Stan's birthday it seemed perfect to spend the day in Tewkesbury where Stan's father lived before he moved with his family to Australia. Looming over the small town is the enormous Tewkesbury Abbey which was consecrated over 800 years ago & is one of the largest Norman churches in the country. We had a long chat with one of the chaplains who explained much of the history & architecture. There is a brilliant mirror arrangement which means you can easily see the roof details without ruining your neck! Leaving this huge Anglican Church we sought out the Methodist one which George probably attended - much smaller & more austere, then went to the museum on Barton St (where he lived) to look for any mention of him & learn about the famous locals. Had no luck but it was special to be in the place where the Herring family came from. Tewkesbury is full of lovely half-timbered houses & overhanging eaves - perhaps fairly unchanged since George's time? Called in to visit Toff Milway at his Conderton Pottery in an old forge & had a great chat with him - he has many wonderful salt fired pots & plates etc with fish motif. Thanks to Jeanne for the advice to stop here. A great day that felt very synchronous - the right place at the right time.
