Three days in Guernsey with a day trip to Sark was quite a change from Iceland - both are islands but SO different. We spent time walking around the old town centre & through tiny streets, up & down many steps & along the harbour. Guernsey has masses of flowers frothing over hanging baskets & window boxes of almost every building - so pretty. Visited the Guernsey Tapestry which is 10 embroidered panels - one for each century of island history. This was a bicentennial project & are beautifully done. Our day in Sark was another step back in time to a place with no cars, where all transport is by tractor, bicycle, horse & cart or shank's pony. We had a tractor pull us, in a tram, up from the port & then had a horse & cart ride for a couple of hours around much of the main island. The island is administered by a parliament of 26 elected plus a seigneur (lord) in his feudal hereditary role, all of whom are in conflict with the millionaire Barclay brothers who own the tiny island of Brechou. Interesting place with lots of history. Went by public bus (for £1) around Guernsey to get a feel for the place & stopped in the German Occupation Museum. The Channel Islands were the only British territory under German control during the Second World War & the story of life then is a very emotive one. This museum is loaded with information & pieces from that time - almost too much to take in. In all museums etc, I try to discover some of the story of the people rather than just dates & events, & once again my belief that we are all the same was reinforced. Went back even further in time with a visit to Castle Cornet - built in the 1200's & now housing even more museums. It was a case of ABM instead of ABC!
