Well I definatly made the most of my last day in Kenya and its 11.11.11. It was the first day since I arrived that African Impact deemed it safe to go into Nairobi :) so finally we were getting to go to the projects in the slums!
I woke up early as I had to go to the office after breakfast and check in but also wanted to send an email ;) since I had no wifi last night. How will I cope when I'm camping for 27 odd nights and no connection to the shire!
Today we were going to a school in the slums of Niarobi to meet the teachers and take their PE class. It was an unbelievable experience, the smell alone knocked you back. They were walking, working, eating, sleeping and living their lives on a rubbish tip. There was no such things as toilets in some areas, children were playing and people selling food right next to human faeces. Except from the environment, people were really friendly and in fact I felt much safer in the slums than I did in Nairobi city centre!
When we reached the school the children were all really happy and delighted to come with us for their PE lesson. We had 124 children to take to an open area next to the large rubbish dumps, the walk there was a good 20mins and I have no idea how we didn't loose any on the way there or the way back. It was really good fun though but very hot. I have taken loads of photos that explain what things were like. Right next to where we were playing on hard gravel there was lots of people racking through the rubbish dump for anything they could salvage. Such a sad sight.
It was surprising to see how well educated the kids were compared to the other schools we had been to, they were all very disciplined and looked out for the younger children. We played group games, sang songs and then they had free time to run about before walking back to school. I found it very strange having so much kids and not knowing whether they were all there or not! Anyhow we escorted or more like they escorted us back to their school for lunch time. The school can't afford to make lunch for them so they go home for their lunch if they're lucky but the teacher told me most of them just sit in the classrooms as they are unable to get any food from home. Shocking how children are starving but still so happy.
After the project at the slums, the coordinators then took us to the Village Market where we all met up. It was the same place we went to last Friday so i had a sneaky few Smirnoff Ices with my lunch :) it was my last day remember!! Went up to the Masai Market and got Verena a birthday present as its her 21st on Sunday and got some alcohol for the wee party in the cottage we had at night!
The part of the day I didn't enjoy was packing!! I've hardly bought anything whilst I've been here but yet I still totally struggled to fit everything in my rucksack! Whoops, what will it be like in another months time?!
In the evening we all sat in the living room, with music and had a few drinks. It was the first cottage party we'd had since I'd been there, was really good fun and as the night got later people started going to their beds and saying their goodbyes. Was really sad because everyone was saying lovely things to me and giving me letters and presents. Verena and Johanna were crying too. I had finished my vodka so was a bit tipsy, after everyone went to their beds it was about 12.30am so I phoned Andrew for a lovely news before going to my bed :)
It was 1.45am before I think I went to sleep and I was getting picked up at 5am!! Eak!!!
I have had an absolute amazing and life changing experience here in Kenya and will never forget my time here nor the people I've met.
'Everything happens for a reason' and 'Kenya has the answers' were our favourite quotes during this last month.
God bless everyone that I've met in Kenya. xxx
