Wowzer just about 2 weeks since I left home, and it honestly feels like yesterday! Still having an absolute blast and today was no different :)
Today was meant to be a day working at the slums in Nairobi and visiting the markets BUT now its regarded as not safe for westerners :( it was a day of hard graft instead!! I definatly mean hard graft, it was at Mukeu, the school for disabled children that I helped at last week! The volunteers that normally work there (Sophia, Chris, Allyssa, Jessica and Louisella) wanted some extra help to clean the dorms from top to bottom, before the new mattresses were put in, so Jess and I joined their team!! It was such a productive day and actually felt I was doing something that was making a huge difference to the life's of 40 children!
Since my visit last week, there had been a water pump and tap installed so they had no longer to use buckets and rope to reach the water in the well! The kids were mesmerised at the idea of a tap and hose! Chris's mum was the source behind this and managed to raised enough money in two weeks over in Oz for this to be able to be installed!
When we first went into the boys dorm, it was the same fowl smell as last week, damp, stale urine and soaking wet clothes everywhere! The smell was so bad, it was close to making me sick (if that describes it any better!) Our aim for the day was to wash the walls and floor, take out all the old mattresses and replace them with new ones that Sophia paid for. When removing the old mattresses they were all wet with urine and had been there for approx 20years!
After the rooms were totally gutted, all that was left was metal frames of bunk beds and then the walls were scrubbed thoroughly! Our job was to be a human washing machine outside, we decided to hand wash all the plastic mattress covers before putting them onto the new mattresses. We had 4 buckets, cold water and soap, it took ages to get the smell of urine out of them! We were all totally shattered on the bus back to brackenhurst but we were all chuffed with what we managed to achieve! The kids were delighted, jumping up and down on their new beds, it was such a brilliant feeling!
Richard the Mukeu co-ordinator gave us a short time to get food then took a few of us down to Limuru supermarket to get anything we needed! He gave us about an hour and a half before we all had to meet at bus to get a lift home!! 5 of us thought we'd go and find a pub for a Friday afternoon pint!
It was crazy how cheap it was, a pint of tusker was 70p and a double baileys was £1.20!! Needless to say Jess and I had quite a few in the hour we had spare! It felt so good, getting some freedom and being out in the local village ourselves!! We are def going back to this pub :)
Film o'clock was 'Friends with Benefits' tonight! Love this film :) Had already seen it at the cinema in the summer though! Weather this afternoon has been awful rained non stop all evening and massive thunder storms! Surprisingly the power has stayed on but the wifi has been down all day!
Early night is definatly called for! Goodnight big brother house xxx
