Saturday morning and I had no real plans, a group of 5 had already left early to go and climb Mt Longonot in the Great Rift Valley and the others were heading into Nairobi on the Matatu! I joined the others for a day trip to downtown Nairobi.
It certainly wasn't like any other downtown city experience I had before!
The Matatu is really something else, at one point we were heading down the wrong side of the duel carriageway as the direction we were going was at a standstill. They think nothing of driving over the central reservation to overtake the hundreds of cars. At one point there was about 8 lanes of traffic trying to get into 2 lanes - the only way I can describe it, is that it's the exact same when your skiing in Switzerland and your trying to get onto a chairlift and everyone pushes forward with thei ski's!! Haha honestly cars, buses, matatu's, van were all pushing forward and touching the vehicles at either side of it! Totally crazy and took exactly an hour! It was an experience in itself the Matatu journey!
When we arrived at the bus stop, it was like we had been dumped in the middle of a roundabout! Nothing like the city centre I'd imagined, it was dirty, market kinda of shops and really dusty!! We headed to the open Masai Market to start with, we had to ask for directions quite a few times, it was quite a scary experience. There was 5 of us all female aged 57, 49, 26, 23 and 20 and we were totally swamped by about 20 Kenyan men at the entrance, who tried to split us all up and they wanted to be like 'our personal shoppers'. It was horrible and quite hard to stay together but we managed, just had to be quite firm and tell them to basically leave us alone but it didn't work - no matter how rude I was to them! Needless to say I bought nothing because they were bugging me so much, felt sorry for the stand holders because if it wasn't for these men I would have bought some things.
The weather was really hot when we were at the market, so headed straight for lunch and drinks but it look ages to find somewhere suitable to eat. Then had a walk back towards the bus station, stopping at a few of the shops, got some dvd's between us to boost the collection back at the cottage. 60 odd pence per dvd and that's for the new films that are not even out at home. We found a really nice hotel on the way back to the bus, so stopped by for a few afternoon drinks sitting out on a gorgeous marble balcony :) it looked totally out of place compared to all the buildings round about but hey we were happy, vodkas for 60p!!! Cheap as!
Then it was the Matatu experience again, this journey had some roller-coaster turns, emergency stops and crazy loud music, got back to Brackenhurst safe and sound about 5pm. Glad I got to see the capital city but understand its not that save, you could see the Solmalians a mile away from the Kenyans! Random army men walking about with massive guns.
Then it was some muskateer giggles for an hour :) Jen and Kylie phoned on viber (and it worked without loosing signal) was ace catching up with them both and apparently I haven't missed anything since I've been away!
In the evening we all chilled and watched My Sisters Keepers, that I had bought in the city, with a sly bottle of Kenyan red to myself ;) It was an amazing film, but so sad, 8 out of 10 of us were all crying!
Mum and Dad then phoned on viber and managed to get a good catch up with them, or more like I talked non stop. They are still at Craigenndarroch but go home tomorrow. Texted Bobby too so him and Kim were at a bonefire night at Gav and Kelly's, which sounded fun too.
It was a really good day, but roll on tomorrow night when we are going out for dinner in Nairobi to Carnivore :D yayyyyy xxx
