Well today was my first full day in Kenya!! Breakfast at Brackenhurst is served from 7am till 8am down at the centre, which is self service a choice of continental along with full hot breakfast! I was not a fatty and just had some cereal and toast!! At breakfast you pick up your packed lunch which has been prepared for you, the night prior you request what you would like so it's all waiting for you the next morning! Just like home ;) hehe. Totally spoilt.
I then went to The African Impact office to find out where my volunteer project was going to be. I met Patrick the head coordinator and then he gave me an induction/power point presentation into what I would be doing etc. I will be working at Karuri a Health Centre with a maternity building attached which has a delivery room and post labour ward! Patrick then took me there and introduced me to Susan the head nurse!
The journey to the clinic was a total eye opener for me, I couldn't believe what I saw - children with no shoes on walking in mud/clay, sheep tied to buildings that u could see all there ribs, very bumpy dirt tracks going through high populated areas with shacks as shops/houses!
The health centre building was stone and looked really nice. But inside it was very basic, dirty, no running water, no toilet just a whole in the ground! Certainly not the kind of clinical environment im used to! I worked with Susan in the Family Planning Clinic, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Got to administer the 12 week contraceptive injection, watch a 5 year implant and a 12 year contraceptive coil being inserted!
In the afternoon Verena (German girl who also volunteers at Karuri) and I sat outside in the sun on the porch of our cottage at Brackenhurst! The first sun I'd seen since I arrived. We then met 8 or 9 new arrivals, who all seemed really nice.
Dinner is served from 6.30pm till 8pm but after speaking to the other volunteers everyone heads to the centre for 6.30pm and has dinner together, there was 21 of us which was good fun - by the time we had our dinner it was totally dark and not the best walking around yourself at night so we all headed back to the cottage to watch 'couples retreat' was really good film and the staff put on a coal fire for us so it wasn't nearly as cold as last night!!
I have had a fantastic day and thoroughly enjoyed my first full day in Kenya!!! :) xxx
