Well I had my alarm all set for 4am in time to finish packing, get ready and be able to phone Jen and Kylie after the dinner dance as I was getting picked up at 5am!! Well I must have slept through my alarm as I somehow woke at 4.45am and got such a shock, plenty time though just didn't have time to phone the musketeers!!!
Niarobi airport was something else, took me an hour and a half to get through to the departure gates, but I wasn't in any rush as my flight had been delayed from 8 till 12. By the time our flight actually took off it was closer to 12.30pm but I was sound asleep as I was totally shattered.
Now this is where the adventure began, I slept through the landing and next I knew I was walking off the plane into 100 degrees!! Ok well a bit of an exaggeration but it was horrendously hot, the airport was a quarter of the size of Sumburgh so you could imagine, I was like why am I here again?! The first thing they asked for was my yellow fever vaccination certificate before you were allowed into the airport, of course I didn't have a clue where mine was and the last time I had seen it was before I left home! Hehe. After 5 or so minutes of raking through my bag in the 100degree heat and starting to panic a little - I found it! That was actually the easiest part, the visa was Ok but then there was no ATM machines at the airport, and I had no currency to pay for the taxi to the hotel whoops - I had to use my emergency back-up in my rucksack and exchange it to Tanzanian shillings.
I was very nervous in the taxi on the way to the hotel as I had no idea where I was going etc and what time I was meant to meet the group. It all worked in fine though, hotel was ermm very basic and my roomie was called Sam who had already her stuff in the room but no sign of her. The heat in my room was intense and I was thinking, what on earth am I doing here all by myself. It was about 2.30pm when I arrived at the hotel and the welcome meeting wasn't till 5.30pm. The streets definatly didn't look save to walk by yourself, I lay down for a while as felt totally lost to say the least and felt really sick and yip I was really sick. I'm putting it down to not coping with the heat and getting myself all worked up.
Then I met my roomie Sam, she was lovely, 29 from Brisbane and we went for a walk together down to the sea front where there was a sea breeze and I felt so much better. It was a very run down town, but the capital for the slave trade for the whole of East Africa back in the day and you could see it would have been a very wealthy place at one point.
In the evening we all met for dinner at a lovely hotel which had a balcony looking out to sea. It was stunning. The tour started in Nairobi 6 days ago so there was already 20 people that already knew each other so it was hard for the 5 'newies' or 'fresh meat' to come into a big group. Everyone seemed lovely though - We all had dinner and a few drinks and it was very reasonably priced for a nice hotel £1.28 for a beer and that was an expensive place!! Let's hope drink stays as cheap as this!
The group has a big age range from 22 to the late 60's maybe early 70's but my guess on the average age would be 30! I walked back with an older couple as I was shattered and you weren't allowed walking by yourself, not the safest of places apparently!
My evening was lovely though, really enjoyed it. There was a crazy rain downpour which cooled the air too so hopefully I'll be able to sleep OK tonight!
Starting to realise Africa doesn't do Internet or ATM machines!! A slight problem for me, considering that's my only way of getting money out and staying sane! There's a few of us on the same boat though and we just have to take out large amounts when we find an ATM that works!!!
Night night Tanzania, please let it be a good sleep :) xxx
