Habari za asubuhi!
Today was my last day nursing at Karuri, as tomorrow is a community project day and next week I am moving projects to work at His Image, which is a baby orphanage!
I didn't sleep well last night but woke feeling much better than yesterday :) Was texting auntie rosemary at breakfast as she wasn't sleeping well back home.
It was an exciting morning for me in Karuri as I helped one of the nurses in the labour room, deliver an 8lb8oz baby girl!!! The mother was called Cecillia and she named her baby girl, Jockey. An 8lb baby is very unusual in the area because normally most of the babies are malnourished, as the mothers do not get the appropriate food during pregnancy! Cecillia, spoke very good English though and allowed me to take photos of her and her baby (After the birth, not during - dont worry!) It was amazing to be able to help, the sister did the pulling and cut the cord but i was handing the utensils, showed the baby to her mother, weighed her, cleaned her up and then wrapped it up in 2 cosy blankets!!! :) then gave the new jockey loads of cuddles until her mum had a shower etc. It is their culture that the mother gives birth alone, without the father or any other family member present. As the men have many wife's, it is not unusual for them to not see their new child for a couple of days.
After we 'so called' cleaned the delivery room and transferred both mother and daughter to the post labour ward, it was back to the treatment room! Today I took stickers to give the children after their dressings or injections, they went down a treat :)
There wasn't anything exciting in this department today! In fact it was really quiet and I didn't do very much, managed to take loads of photos though to try and show people the clinical environment here compared to back home! I went on break with my friends, the student nurses, and they decided they would attempt to braid my hair like theirs! It was hilarious and they couldn't understand why my hair was so soft, was such a laugh! Needless to say they're on Facebook too so I now have half of Karuri Health Centre adding me as a friend!!
After all my goodbyes, it was back to Brackenhurst for a quick freshen up before my first Swahili lesson. This should have been my 3rd lesson but since their was a Kenyan holiday and then the teacher was sick last week, I've missed 2 weeks!! Anyways it was really good fun, and learnt loads. Just like being back at school which is weird. Africans speak Swahili in a lot of their countries which is good for me, hopefully after visiting 8 countries ill be able to understand and speak something!!
Dinner tonight was actually rice and chicken compared to the usual rice and beef! It was such a nice change.
Film o'clock was Horrible Bosses tonight but I only watched the first half an hour before retiring to bed with my book! There has been to wifi all day :( and the network is even down at the main reception too!
