This morning was gorgeous!!! Woke to a really nice email and text which made me smile :) the sun was shining, had amazing homemade pancakes for breakfast, received two Scotland postcards from Mum (I really didnt think they would actually reach me) and hopefully we will be allowed back into Nairobi this week!!! It was all good for a Tuesday morning :)
Today I was working in the treatment room with another student nurse called Elizabeth! My pockets were full of lolly's for all the young kids that came in. To start the day off we had a 8yr old girl that had been hut by a car, that was quite interesting then another young boy that had dislocated his hip yesterday playing football. Both these cases - the doctor was present so no major decision making was needed :)
Then the adrenaline started pumping when the door opened and four men were carrying a body into the room by his hands and feet and literally dumped him on the so called trolley. It was a scary sight, he was unconscious and so thin! Totally malnourished! I assisted the doctor, but there's no such thing as BP and saturation monitors, ECG machine, blood glucose monitor - those were all the things I wanted to carry out but instead we just put stat bags of saline and glucose into him. There wasn't anything else we could do as there wasn't the resources. After a few hours of pumping fluids into him, his son came and carried him out to take him to a local hospital. It turned out he was 42 years old but look 70 and was HIV positive but completely in denial and had TB. It was a very sad case, they didn't think he would live for very long!
While all this was going on, patients were still coming into the room to get dressings and different kinds of injections done. It was a bit hectic at one stage. Did a few dressings that were so bad they actually required grafting. One young guy had a leg wound following a car accident and I could actually see his bone, the wound odour was horrendous. There isn't such things as different dressings so the only thing they were doing was inserting betadine soaks into the wound! Totally crazy!
It was certainly an interesting day at Karuri! The sun was still shining for a while when we got back so sat outside until supper time!
Verena, Lavinia, Elaine, Jess and I sat downstairs and had a cheaky bottle or two of African red wine to celebrate new beginnings for Verena and Jess! It was a lovely evening under candle light putting the world to rights :)
Back home Jen, Kylie and Andrew were going out for tea then to young farmers quiz!! Got some ace messages from them saying how much they liked their Musketeers 2011 photo books :) Gutted I haven't been able to see the books properly!
A lovely day in Big Brother house! xxx
