Monday morning already, so was back to the nursing malarkey at Karuri Health Centre and back to the sort of nursing Im accustomed too! This week I am working in the treatment room of the health centre with Cecilla a new student nurse!!
The room is very basic, and is split into two parts, one half is the area for dressings and the other is for the injections!! I will try and take photos this week so people can actually see what it's like. Theres a bench for people to wait for their treatment, which looks straight into the two areas. No dignity or privacy what so ever and it's just on a first come first serve basis!!
It was a busy morning: with all sorts of wounds, treating a lady with suspected malaria, injecting IM gentamycin with benzlypenicillin in the same syringe, giving IV antibiotics without a venflon and just putting needle straight into vein, giving adrenaline SC for a wheeze!!!! Crazy s***. All very different practice to back home.
There are no such thing as different dressings, so basically you clean the wound with saline and then put a guaze swab with betadine on it and keep it on with a very small gauze like bandage! Every single wound was treated like this!
The "sterile" dressing packs were cleaned in 3 different buckets and then left out to dry, not very sterile since the water is never changed until the next morning!!! I could go on and on about the crazy things I've seen but probably bored everyone already!
During my break I went for a walk down the street with my fellow student nurse friend, probably not the safest thing I've done but i was with 4 locals!!! It's crazy that these communities never see white people! Saying that I've only seen one white person (other that my house mates/fellow volunteers) since I've arrived here, we really are out in the sticks in the local communities!!
We have actually had a whole day without rain :) and the weather was ace!! Definatly need the sun cream though cos it was roasty toasty! Tan is coming along nicely :) trying to keep the strap lines minimum cos knowing me they'll still be there in May next year ha! I'm planning for bridesmaid duties already :)
The big bro house has went from 20 house mates to 12 in the last few days!! It's been so much quieter tonight already! There's heaps of rooms empty and the most important thing is... The bathroom I use has went from 8 people using it to 4 :) yay!!! small things excite you in Africa town!
Also fed the guards with the cakes I made yesterday that were left over, they were delighted - crazy how 4 small cakes can mean so much to someone!
Watched social network AGAIN tonight, this time I understood it :)
Missing Craigenndarroch this week though :( gutted.com xxx
