Well.. The name says it all. As we wound our way down to the entry gate we were very proud of our brand new National Park pass... No need to pay at every park from now on. (We obtained a yearly WA National Park pass- $88)
The stunning views started the minute we drove into the park, the landscape was much like that of Wilsons Prom. As we drove past Frenchmans Peak, Tristan knew he and Tara needed to hike this huge mountain to get a true appreciation of what Cape Le Grand was all about. But... on we drove in search of Lucky Bay, Australias whitest beach.
Around the bend and there it was, the whitest beach in Australia. All three of us let out a gasp (Larry included)... it was amazing, goosebump worthy. Tara had read about the Kangaroos that hopped along the beach, so off we went in search of the fury little characters. We found them chilled out under the shadesails not at all fussed by our presence. After a few quick snaps Larry was ready for a taste of the whitest sand in Aus.
At first Tristan said we don't need to put him low range or let the tyres down because 'the sands pretty hard' ... oh how wrong he was. About 1Km down the beach it turned to a range of at least 1 foot deep ruts and channels criss crossing all over the beach. Low Range it was.
Then when Larry lost his momentum the heart rate got a bit stronger.... We were bogged! With little 4WD experience (let alone sand driving experience), Tristan was worried.... He had thoughts of Larry staying there the night or even for good. With no recovery or Maxx Trax to assist... it was all up to Larry. The tyres were promptly let down and after a little coaxing by Tristan and a whole lot of laughing by Tara (a nervous laugh for sure) we were out of the bog. Now it was time to turn Larry around and get the hell off this beach. After he was turned it was a sprint for the harder sand... momentum was our friend at this stage.
Once we found the harder sand it was in for a dip. The freezing southern water was somewhat refreshing. We both looked at each other and said we had never swum in such clear water.... Ever.
So much so we came back to Cape Le Grand on Anzac Day. After all we (well Tristan!) needed to hike Frenchman Peak. As we started the 3km hike to the summit we were misled by the easy board walk leading up to the mountain. Then out of the blue there it was... a wall of rock. For a relatively short hike it felt like an eternity of climbing. But at the summit we were rewarded with a 360 degree view of Cape Le Grand in all her beauty. We compared it to Mt Little (engagement) and it was close but Mt Little won for obvious reasons! After many pictures, Go-pro shots, selfies and videos it was time for the descent. Half way down we were greeted by a jogger who briskly kept jogging past, much to our disbelief-definately an elite athlete!
After our hike, we treated ourselves to a swim back at Lucky Bay...So refreshing... where we finally saw the roos on the beach! It was so Aussie!
Until next time.... Thanks Cape Le Grand (We will be back!) xx
