As we said farewell to Walpole, we headed North West. Tara's dad mentioned a massive tree that could be climbed... The Gloucester Tree!
As we pulled into the National Park, Tristan was very eager to climb the massive tree, Tara was not so keen. As we walked up to the tree, it was only a series of 16mm deformed concreting bars that were jammed in a spiral around a tree. A little bit of pig wire fencing was stuck to the outside of the tree for so called 'protection' but realistically it would have done nothing if you fell or slipped. Tara was staying put, but Tristan had to do it. The climb up was fine at the start but as you kept climbing the heart rate rose and the nerves definitely set in. At the top of the tree at a height of 72 metres was a steel platform. The history of the tree sates that it was used for the rangers to check for fire activity. It was a very surreal fealing that there was no harnesses or safety measures whatsoever... Guess thats how they roll in WA!
After Pemberton it was a little detour back to the HWY, 43 km to be exact. We think google maps doesn't want people to do U-turns so it navigates massive detours much like we had in Esperance. It was fun, Tristan only cracked it for a moment or so! Off we went to Augusta-Home of the most South Western point of Australia. We did however, come across a roadside veggie store- we were so excited and stocked up on the freshest of vegetables!
The Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse was a stunning spot to take in the views and see where the Indian and Southern Oceans meet. That afternoon it was time to take in the beautiful sunset over the ocean of the Cape Leeuwin National Park. We took Larry down the dirt road to a stunning
vantage point. Tara took a bottle of the Champagne to enjoy and Tristan being the designated driver... it was a bottle of frantelle! As we jumped up on Larry's Bullbar to take in the sunset we were both taken back by this stunning country we live in.
Dinner that night was from the butcher... Mad as a cut snake but very friendly and very helpful. He had no idea what the German tourists before us wanted but after several minutes he worked it out, or they just settled with what he gave them, who knows but it was funny to watch. We tried his sausage balls, not as bad as they sound... they were delicious!
Margaret River...only 40km's away...The excitement is building!
